Massive Blast Rocks Embakasi; Prime Suspects Identified
In a tragic incident on February 1, 2024, at approximately 11:30 pm, a massive explosion occurred at an illegal LPG gas refilling point in the Mradi area of Embakasi, Nairobi. Reports from the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) shed light on the horrifying aftermath of the blast.
The leased LPG refilling site, believed to be managed by Derrick Kimathi, emerged as the epicenter of the calamity. Stephen Kilonzo was responsible for overseeing its operations. The explosion resulted in six fatalities, while around 300 individuals sustained varying degrees of burns. Some victims have been treated and released, but others remain hospitalized in critical conditions.
The devastating blast also wreaked havoc on the surrounding area, causing extensive damage to motor vehicles, businesses, and residential properties, engulfing them in a harrowing inferno.
The DCI expresses condolences to the bereaved families and extends wishes for the swift recovery of those still undergoing treatment in various medical facilities.
In a bid to ensure justice prevails, the DCI has taken swift action, apprehending the prime suspect, Derrick Kimathi, along with three officials from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) who were found to be complicit. The detained NEMA officials are David Ongare (Director of Environment Compliance), Joseph Makau (Head of Environmental Impact Assessment), and Mirrian Kioko.
However, the investigation is far from over. Five additional suspects remain at large and are actively sought by the DCI to answer for their alleged roles in the incident. The wanted individuals include Stephen Kilonzo (site manager), Ann Kabiri Mirungi of NEMA, Lynette Cheruyoit (NEMA’s Senior Environmental Officer), truck driver Robert Gitau, and Abraham Mwangi (driver).
