ODM MP threaten to resign if Odinga is arrested: ” We’ve 70% of the country”

Embakasi MP Babu Owino warned on Tuesday, March 21, that Azimio MP will step down if the Kenyan Kwanza government tries to arrest opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Outside the parliament building, Babu said that the arrest of Odinga was treasonous because of the high position of the former prime minister in the country.

“Raila Amollo Odinga is the fourth arm of the government. If you want this country to go down, even as much utter that you want to arrest him. We have 70 per cent of the country and we the MPs will resign and we will fight a course that is going to clean this country one and for all,” Babu Owino said.

The youthful MP openly stated that the mass resignation would plunge the country into a constitutional crisis that would damage the legislative branch.

But Constitutional Attorney Bobby Mkangi said the resignation of all members of parliament, including those close to President William Ruto, would not affect Ruto presidency.

“What we will have is a grand by-election. There would be no General Election, not even if the governors and Members of the County Assembly reigned,” Mkangi detailed.

He pointed out that while the rioters only disrupted business in Nairobi, Odinga’s arrest would bring the entire region to a standstill.

It should be noted that there will be no by-elections as the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) has not yet been formed.

IEBC has no Commissoner after expiration of the contracts of former chairman Wafula Chebukati and members Abdi Gulie and Boyi Molu, and the resignations of Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyangai and Francis Vanderi.

The contract with Irene Masit was terminated on the recommendation of the IEBC tribunal, which found her guilty of gross violations.

Babu Owino’s comments come hours after UDA lawmakers asked Police Commissioner Japhet Koome to prosecute Odinga for destroying property at a March 20th mass action rally.
