The Azimio La Umoja team, in a press release dated 13th June 2023, has rejected plan by Kenya Kwanza Gov’t to crackdown on Mungiki sect.
In a statement to the press, the Azimio team says there are clear indications that the Kenya Kwanza administration is about to unleash brute and deadly force of youths in central Kenya and parts of Nairobi whom it accuses of being members of Mungiki.
“Without tabling any evidence whatsoever that Mungiki has re-emerged and is engaged in criminal activities, Kenya Kwanza has embarked on a campaign of warning the sect of dire consequences over illicit brews and non-existent protest marches, among other imaginary crimes.” Azimio’s statement read.
As a party, Azimio says it wish to challenge Kenya Kwanza not to run away from responsibility.
That the young people the KK administration now sees as Mungiki and other types of criminals are the same ones it mobilized as foot-soldiers for the now failed promise of economic revival.
“Those youths feel frustrated, betrayed, used and dumped. They are not criminals but victims of a false dawn and broken promises. These youths deserve a deal, not guns and bullets. Kenya Kwanza must give these youths the jobs and training they were promised during the campaigns.”
Azimio noted that the Kenya Kwanza must admit failure and restore programs like Kazi Mtaani that the previous administration put in place to help these young Kenyans earn a living.
“They could also do with direct cash transfer in these difficult times as it is clear the so-called
Hustler Fund is not working for them despite the hype.
“Azimio la Umoja will not sit back and watch the regime resort to the extra-judicial executions
and enforced disappearances witnessed in the past in the name of fighting non-existent crimes.”
Azimio detailed that the country is in economic depression, with many families unable to cater for members. “The times require creativity and empathy, not quick recourse to guns and bullets.”
