Detective says 40 individuals were arrested on Tuesday May 2nd 2023 for engaging in acts of violence in different parts of the city.
During the protests, DCI reports, property worth millions of shillings was destroyed including the setting ablaze of a passenger service vehicle along Ngong Road and a truck hauling 29-tonnes of steel cables along the Southern By-pass, from Kampala, Uganda.
The suspects were arraigned in different courts across the city on 3rd May and charged with various offences from Robbery with Violence contrary to section 296(2) of the penal code, Malicious Damage to property contrary to section 339(1) of the penal code and Unlawful Assembly contrary section 78(1) as read with section 79 of the penal code.
“Among those arrested along the Southern By-Pass was Kelvin Kavasika, a 23-year-old fugitive who is wanted for committing various robberies in the city, some of which are pending before court. At the time of his arrest, he was armed with a knife.” A statement from DCI reads
Detectives note that they have also recorded statements from various witnesses and obtained CCTV footage in relation to some of the incidents, which shall be adduced in court, against the suspects.
“Members of the public are cautioned against engaging in acts of violence during the illegal demos and anyone arrested shall be dealt with firmly, within the law.”
