Breakthrough on National Dialogue; Azimio and Gov’t.
It is a major breakthrough on Bi-partisan talks as Azimio and the Gov’t team agrees on major issues to be discussed in the National Dialogue.
Among the issues agreed upon includes outstanding matters like Article 43 of the Constitution, the Cost of Living and related issues: implementation of the “two-thirds gender rule”: governance issues, including promoting national unity and inclusivity in public appointments: and adequate checks and balances.
Electoral Justice and Related Matters: restructuring and reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (“the IEBC”);: boundaries delimitation; and audit of the 2022 presidential election.
The two teams also agreed on entrenching Funds into the Constitution: the National Government Constituencies Development Fund; the National Government Affirmative Action Fund; and the Senate Oversight Fund.
They also stressed on establishment and Entrenchment of State Offices: the office of the Leader of the Official Opposition; and the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Fidelity to Political Parties/Coalitions and the law on multiparty democracy and Preventing interference with political parties/coalitions.
While commenting on the agreement, the Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa noted that today, the 30th of August 2023, marks a significant stride towards ushering in a new era of peaceful and constructive political negotiations.
Determined to rewrite our history, according to Ichungwa, the two political camps formalized the framework agreement and agenda that will be the basis of the National Dialogue Committee’s talks.
“This momentous step underscores our commitment to prioritizing the greater good of our nation above all else.”By embarking on this journey, we are collectively rejecting the use of violence as a currency in political discourse.” Said Ichungwa.
Adding: “Our dedication to open dialogue, collaboration, & understanding signifies our genuine intent to shape a brighter future for our country. We’ve laid the foundation for discussions that hopefully will lead to innovative solutions that will enrich our nation.”
In his remarks, Kalonzo Musyoka, who leads the opposition team in the dialogue noted that change happens by listening and then starting a dialogue with Kenyans ready to “serve our beloved Nation”. Adding “That is what we are fostering at Bomas of Kenya with Co Chair @KIMANIICHUNGWAH of the National Dialogue Committee.”
