Updates: JKIA runway now opened.
The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport runway is now open after temporary closure following a technical issue.
JKIA has made this known via twitter.
“The JKIA runway is now opened, & operations at the airport have resumed. Disabled aircraft has been cleared from the runway.” The statement from JKIA reads.
It adds: “Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for information on the status of their flights.”
The JKIA apologiesed for any inconvenience caused due by the incident.
“We regret the inconvenience caused by today’s incident.”
As earlier reported, JKIA had noted that it “has temporarily closed” its operation “due to an aborted takeoff by Cargo plane that developed technical issues this morning.”
“Our top priority is the safety of all passengers and we are working closely with the relevant authorities to resolve this situation as quickly and safely as possible.” A statement seen by K47 news read in part.
JKIA further noted that as a result of the runway closure, all incoming and outgoing flights have been temporarily suspende”
It has been revealed that the engine to the plane caught fire, causing runway tire to burst into flames. 12 out of 16 tires were razed down by fire.
